Die schöne und egozentrische Scarlett O'Hara hat während des amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges nur ein Ziel vor Augen: Die Bewahrung ihres Südstaaten-Gutes Tara, auf dem sie glücklich aufwuchs und sich unsterblich in den gutmütigen Ashley Wilkes verliebte. Da er schon Bräutigam der naiven Melanie ist, heiratet sie den Langweiler Charles. Die Ehe ist nicht von Dauer - Charles fällt im Krieg. Schließlich lernt Scarlett den Herzensbrecher Rhett Butler kennen, dessen Zuneigung sie schamlos ausnützt. Zu spät erkennt sie, wen sie wirklich liebt.
